Why does my horse have an Itchy Tail?
Healthy skin is the foundation.
A healthy tail is the result.
Common causes include:
Insects (AKA Sweet Itch)
An allergic reaction to biting midges, where an overactive immune response causes intense itching and irritation around areas like tail, mane and belly.
Dry, brittle hair/skin
Dry, brittle skin hair/skin can leave the tail area more prone to irritation. Silicones (commonly used in mane/tail/shine products) are hydrophobic meaning they repel water and can cause drying.
Threadworms
Threadworms (Pinworms) lay eggs around the tail area, which can cause irritation and lead to itching and tail rubbing in some horses.
Sensitive Skin
Some horses are more sensitive to products, chemicals and/or environmental factors.

What you can do every day

Brush Daily
Gently brush the tail every day to remove dirt, tangles and loose hair.
Nourish the Skin

Protective Rugs
Using protective rugs can shield your horse against flies and other environmental aggressors. Be sure to clean them regularly.
Create a Barrier

Avoid This
Some products can actually make itching worse.
Silicone Sprays (AKA Detangling / Shine Sprays)
While they may create shine temporarily, they coat the hair in silicones (a form of liquid plastic) that creates a hydrophobic barrier.
This can lead to:
- Build-up on the hair/skin
- Dryness and Brittleness (hair weakness & breaking)
- Increased irritation and itching over time
Common silicones to look out for on ingredients list:
- Dimethicone
- Cyclopentasiloxane
- Cyclohexasiloxane
- Amodimethicone
- Dimethiconol
Typically, silicones end in –cone, –conol or –siloxane.
