What to Feed a Horse in Light Work or a Happy Hacker

For many happy hackers and horses in light work, feeding can be much simpler than owners expect.

If your horse maintains a healthy body condition, has plenty of energy for the work you're asking them to do and receives suitable forage, there may be no need for a large bucket feed.

At NEIGHKED, we'd start with the same principle we use for every horse:

Forage first – then build the rest of the diet around the individual.

Start With Forage

Good-quality forage should form the foundation of the diet.

Grass, hay or haylage will usually provide the majority of what a horse in light work eats, with the exact amount and type depending on bodyweight, body condition, turnout, grazing, season and individual metabolism.

Rather than starting by asking what hard feed to buy, first look at the forage available and your horse's current condition.

Keep the Bucket Simple

For many horses in light work, the bucket doesn't need to be enormous.

A straightforward fibre-based feed can provide a useful base and carrier for any additional nutrients or supplements required.

A typical NEIGHKED-style feeding approach might include:

Chaff
An appropriate fibre compound mix
A small portion of correctly prepared unmolassed sugar beet
Targeted supplements according to the individual horse

Unmolassed sugar beet provides a digestible source of fibre and can be incorporated into a fibre-focused ration. Always prepare and feed it according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Does a Happy Hacker Need Supplements?

Not every horse needs every supplement.

The question should always be: what does this particular horse need?

Depending on the individual, owners may choose targeted nutritional support such as HERCULES where additional amino acid support is appropriate, or GYMNAST or SUPER SOUND as part of a joint-support programme.

For horses that are naturally reactive or become unsettled in particular situations, BUCK OFF may also be considered as part of their nutritional routine.

The important point isn't to add everything. It's to choose nutritional support according to the individual horse.

An Example Feeding Plan for a Happy Hacker

For a typical horse in light work, a simple plan could therefore look like:

Forage: appropriate grass, hay or haylage as the foundation of the diet.

Bucket feed: chaff + suitable fibre compound mix + a small portion of soaked unmolassed sugar beet.

Targeted nutritional support: HERCULES, GYMNAST or SUPER SOUND, and BUCK OFF where appropriate to the individual horse.

The actual quantities will depend on the horse, its forage and the manufacturer's feeding recommendations.

For a horse that's healthy, maintaining an appropriate body condition and coping comfortably with its workload, there is no prize for creating the biggest bucket on the yard.

Keep it simple, start with fibre and feed the horse that's actually standing in front of you.

BUCK OFF Review_Carlie

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

BUCK OFF

I decided to try Buck off when my new horse arrived, as she needed time to adjust to her new home and lifestyle and was finding hacking solo a bit scary! She was very spooky and anxious going out alone, however now I can hack her on my own and she leaves home lovely and calm which in turn makes me calmer too! It's stopped her spins and general napping, she will still look at things and is alert but we can have a conversation about the monster in the bush now and just move past it! I wouldn't be without it now and she also loves the taste.

HERCULES

My Appaloosa dropped a lot of weight in Winter despite being on hard feed and hayledge. I’ve noticed a rapid difference in his condition in just one bottle of Hercules!

SUPER SOUND

Waited a month to leave a review, to give it time to work. We have a 12yo mare that's always tense. She has really loosened up and more willing to work, more sass, that's where the Buck off comes in. I made a subscription so I'll definitely keep her on this. Considering we are on 2 continents the shipping is fast.

GYMNAST

I've been using Gymnast for a few years now and have seen a visible improvement in my mares way of going. She has a sticky stifle and some changes in her other hock and this supplement is fantastic to support her joints and keep her moving comfortably without needing farther intervention. I'm very impressed with how well it's worked and how comfortable my mare is.

This example feeding plan is intended as a general guide only and is not a personalised diet or a substitute for veterinary or professional nutritional advice. Individual requirements vary according to bodyweight, condition, workload, forage, age, health and metabolism.

Always follow manufacturers' feeding and preparation instructions, particularly when soaking feeds such as sugar beet, and introduce dietary changes gradually. If your horse has a medical condition, specific dietary requirements, unexplained changes in weight or condition, or you are unsure what to feed, speak to your vet or a suitably qualified equine nutritionist.
