Tail Rubbing After Travelling: What Comes Next?

Travelling. Pressure. Friction. Rubbing.

It doesn't take much to load your horse with a perfectly good tail… and unload them with a very different one.

If travelling or repeated pressure has left the top of your horse's tail sore, scurfy or irritated, it's tempting to focus on the missing hair.

But start with the skin.

What to Do After a Tail Rub

Part the hair so you can properly see and reach the affected area.

If necessary, gently clean away any dirt, sweat or debris. Then apply COLLAGEN & KELP FONDANT directly to the skin, gently working it into the area rather than simply coating the surrounding hair.

For over-rubbed skin that needs extra care, apply once or twice daily as part of your horse’s grooming routine.

And this is exactly what was done with the horse shown here.

“This is Jupiter’s tail. He unfortunately rubbed his tail raw whilst travelling. The first image was taken on the day he arrived, the second picture was taken exactly 7 days later. COLLAGEN & KELP FONDANT was applied daily.”

Skin first. Hair second.

Once the skin is healthy again, if hair has been lost, you can then look at introducing REGROW to support hair regrowth where the follicles are still active.

DON'T FORGET TO CHECK AFTER TRAVELLING

If your horse is prone to leaning or rubbing while travelling, make checking the top of their tail part of your routine when they come off the lorry or trailer.

Part the hair and check the skin underneath - particularly if you notice rubbing, pressure or missing hair.

Because the sooner you spot irritated skin, the sooner you can start looking after it.

RUB → REPAIR → REGROW

If your horse continues to rub their tail, or the rubbing keeps returning, it’s worth looking beyond travelling or pressure to understand what else could be behind it – read our guide to itchy tails.

This stuff is unreal. The only thing that’s worked for us and within a few months the growth is thick and bushy for the first time in a few years.

Magical cream

My brothers pony was horrendously rubbing his tail! And my TB was well know for getting rub marks for various rugs and even boots, used this for 2 weeks and boom itching has stopped and no sign of any rub marks and hair has never felt so soft and healthy! Definitely recommend!!
