Can Buck Off Help My Horse Feel Calmer When Hacking?

Can Buck Off Help My Horse Feel Calmer When Hacking?

Yes — if your horse becomes tense, spooky or over-reactive when hacking, Buck Off may be a really useful option.

Some horses are perfectly relaxed in the arena but feel completely different once you take them out hacking. Suddenly there are cars, dogs, bikes, bins, wildlife, machinery and unexpected noises to deal with.

For a naturally sensitive horse, that's a lot to process.

Why is my horse so spooky when hacking?

Horses are flight animals, so being aware of their surroundings is completely normal.

The difference is how they respond to what they notice.

One horse might notice a bin, look at it and walk past.

Another notices the same bin, becomes tense, spooks and then spends the next ten minutes on high alert looking for the next potential threat.

It's that tendency to over-react and remain in a heightened state that we're particularly interested in with Buck Off.

How could Buck Off help with hacking?

Buck Off isn't designed to stop your horse noticing things or remove their natural flight instinct.

Instead, it's designed to support a calmer, more proportionate response in horses that are tense, spooky, sharp or over-reactive.

So we're not necessarily expecting your horse to stop looking at the tractor.

We're looking for things like:

A smaller reaction when something worries them
Less tension throughout the hack
Recovering more quickly after a spook
Being able to bring their attention back to you
Coping better with unexpected situations
Feeling less like they're constantly waiting for something to happen

We don't want your horse to stop noticing things. We want them to be better able to cope with what they notice.

BUCK OFF + Dose Measure

What if my horse lacks confidence hacking?

Buck Off can still be useful.

A nervous horse can become increasingly tense as a hack progresses. The more tense they become, the lower their threshold for reacting can become — so something relatively small can suddenly produce a very big response.

Supporting a calmer mental state can help give you a better foundation from which to build confidence.

However, Buck Off isn't a replacement for training.

If your horse is inexperienced or genuinely doesn't understand how to cope with hacking, give them time. Going out with a sensible companion, choosing quiet routes, keeping early hacks manageable and gradually introducing more challenging situations can all help build confidence.

Buck Off can provide additional support alongside that process.

Will Buck Off make hacking completely safe?

No supplement can guarantee that.

Horses are still horses, and even the calmest horse can react to something genuinely frightening.

Buck Off isn't a sedative and won't remove your horse's natural instincts.

The aim is to support the horse that reacts more strongly or for longer than necessary, rather than trying to create a horse that never reacts at all.

Do I just give Buck Off before I go hacking?

No.

Buck Off isn't a sedative.

It typically takes around 7 days to start working and should be fed consistently.

If hacking is where your horse's reactivity becomes most obvious, we'd still recommend feeding Buck Off every day rather than only on the days you hack.

A calmer horse can become a more confident horse

Confidence is built through good experiences.

If every hack leaves your horse tense and overwhelmed, building that confidence can be difficult.

If Buck Off can help an over-reactive horse stay in a calmer state, recover more quickly when something does frighten them and remain able to listen to their rider, it can make those positive experiences easier to achieve.

The goal isn't a horse that never looks at anything.

It's a horse that can look, process it and move on.

My mare isn't naughty but she's a worrier when hacking on her own. I have seen a dramatic change in her after putting her on Buck Off. She manages to give herself time to work it out and settle and enjoy her hacks on her own.

I have always been a bit unsure about calmers but having read so many good reviews I decided to try Buck Off and I am very pleased with the results. I noticed a change in Teddy after ten days (much steadier) and this morning, which was day twelve we managed a short hack by ourselves without any problems. he was a bit twitchy with the shadows (he has limited vision in his left eye) but NO spooking!! I will definitely be continuing with It and will highly recommend it.

Amazing product I would recommend this product to anyone who has a spooky horse. It's worked for my sports horse. He wouldn't hack out in company never mind on his own spooky in the arena too. We now hack on our own & in company he leads most of the time.
