Life after racing can be a huge adjustment for a Thoroughbred.
A different routine. A different job. New environments. Hacking. Traffic. Competitions. And an entirely different set of expectations.
For some ex-racehorses, learning to navigate that new world takes time — particularly when you have a horse who is naturally very alert and highly reactive to what's happening around them.
That was the challenge Cressida Heath faced with her Thoroughbred mare.
And, after more than a year of consistently feeding Buck Off, Cressida says one of the biggest changes has been her mare's ability to process what's happening around her more calmly.
“I am thrilled with how Buck Off is helping my hyper reactive Thoroughbred mare to be able to process external stimuli in a more rational way.”
When everything feels like a big deal
A horse who is highly reactive isn't necessarily being naughty.
For some horses, the problem is how quickly they respond to something they perceive as potentially worrying.
A movement in the hedge.
A vehicle approaching.
A strange sound.
Another horse becoming excited.
The atmosphere at a competition.
Where one horse might notice something, assess it and carry on, a more reactive horse can go from noticing → worrying → reacting incredibly quickly.
And when a horse is already tense or overwhelmed, learning becomes much more difficult.
For Cressida, one of the goals was to help her mare learn to hack out with a more relaxed frame of mind.
Learning to hack after racing
Hacking can be a completely different experience for an ex-racehorse.
Instead of exercising within the familiar structure of racing, they're suddenly being asked to walk calmly down lanes, pass unfamiliar objects, encounter traffic and deal with unexpected sights and sounds.
That's a lot of information to process.
Cressida didn't expect Buck Off to replace training. Instead, she has used it consistently alongside her mare's education.
“She has been on the recommended daily dose for over a year now and it has helped her to be able to learn how to hack out with a more relaxed frame of mind.”
And that distinction is important.
Buck Off isn't designed to make a horse sleepy or switch off their natural awareness.
The aim is to support a horse who is better able to focus and respond more proportionately, so that training has a chance to get through.
Over time, those calmer experiences can give horse and rider the opportunity to build confidence together.
What about competitions?
Cressida has also found Buck Off useful when taking her mare into a competition environment.
Competition days can introduce a whole collection of additional stressors at once: travelling, unfamiliar surroundings, busy warm-up arenas, tannoys, other horses and the general increase in atmosphere.
For an already reactive horse, that's potentially a lot to deal with.
Cressida says:
“By increasing the dose on a competition day, she is now able to be more calm and confident in the competitive atmosphere.”
Buck Off's feeding guidance allows the amount fed to be adjusted within the recommended feeding rates according to the individual horse, with specific guidance for stressful situations such as travelling and competing. Always follow the feeding instructions and maximum recommended intake shown on the product.
The objective isn't to remove the energy a horse needs to perform.
It's to support calmness, focus and a more proportionate response to what's going on around them.
Consistency matters
There's another part of Cressida's story that we think is particularly important:
Her mare has been fed Buck Off consistently for more than a year.
Buck Off isn't intended simply as something you reach for five minutes before getting on a particularly sharp horse.
For horses who are habitually tense, spooky or over-reactive, we recommend introducing Buck Off consistently and allowing time to assess how your individual horse responds.
The goal is to support the horse while you continue doing the other work that matters — training, building confidence, providing appropriate turnout and exercise, and creating positive experiences.
And, of course, if a horse's behaviour changes suddenly or dramatically, always investigate potential physical causes such as pain or discomfort rather than assuming it's purely behavioural.
From reacting to learning
Perhaps the loveliest part of Cressida's testimonial isn't actually about competition results.
It's this:
“So many thanks to Neighked Horse for helping my horse to reduce her stress levels and start to enjoy her life after racing.”
Because that's ultimately what we'd like for any horse using Buck Off.
Not a horse who has lost their personality.
Not a horse who has been dulled.
But a horse who feels able to process more, react less and learn from the experiences we're giving them.
For Cressida and her Thoroughbred mare, that has meant learning to hack with a more relaxed frame of mind, becoming calmer and more confident in competition environments and, most importantly, beginning to enjoy a new life after racing.
Same horse. Same personality. Just a little more able to cope with the world around her.
Individual experiences may vary. Buck Off is a complementary feeding stuff and is not a medicinal product. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any medical condition or disease.
