Itchy tails are incredibly common, and often an isolated itchy area starts with something as simple as dry, scurfy or irritated skin. Once your horse starts rubbing, though, the rubbing itself causes more irritation, creating an itch–rub–itch cycle that can quickly lead to broken hairs and a damaged tail. Product build-up, insufficient washing and overuse of silicone-based grooming products can all contribute, so always start by looking closely at the skin itself.
The important question is whether you’re dealing with one isolated itchy area or itching in multiple places. If it’s just the tail or one small area, concentrate on restoring and protecting the skin locally. If your horse is rubbing their mane and tail, biting or itching in several places, it’s time to support their skin more broadly as well. Persistent or severe itching should always be investigated, including considering causes such as pinworm, and veterinary advice should be sought for significant swelling, soreness, broken skin or anything that concerns you.
