Is Buck Off Suitable for Stallions?

Yes. BUCK OFF can be fed to stallions, and it may be particularly useful for stallions that are naturally tense, sharp or over-reactive.

However, it's important to understand what BUCK OFF is designed to do — and what it isn't.

BUCK OFF isn't designed to suppress normal stallion behaviour or change your horse's hormones. Its purpose is to support a calmer, more proportionate response to situations a horse finds stressful or stimulating.

Can BUCK OFF make my stallion calmer?

Potentially, if the behaviour you're seeing is related to tension or over-reactivity.

Stallions can be incredibly well behaved while still being very aware of their surroundings. Other horses, unfamiliar environments, travelling and competitions can all increase stimulation.

If your stallion tends to become overwhelmed by that stimulation, goes from 0–100 very quickly or struggles to settle again once something has triggered a reaction, that's where we'd consider BUCK OFF.

The aim isn't to make him dull or sleepy.

We want him to notice what's happening without feeling that he has to react quite so strongly to it.

Will BUCK OFF stop stallion behaviour around mares?

This isn't what BUCK OFF is designed for.

If your stallion calls to mares, shows sexual interest or displays other normal hormone-driven stallion behaviour, you shouldn't expect BUCK OFF to remove it.

BUCK OFF isn't a hormonal supplement and isn't intended to reduce testosterone.

However, there can be a difference between noticing a mare and becoming so stimulated that the horse struggles to settle or concentrate afterwards.

BUCK OFF may help support the horse's response to exciting or stressful situations, but it won't turn a stallion into a gelding — nor would we want it to.

What about a stallion that's difficult to handle?

Again, we'd look at why.

If he's difficult because he's tense, anxious or highly reactive, BUCK OFF may be useful.

If the behaviour is learned, hormonal, caused by inappropriate management or related to pain or discomfort, a calmer isn't necessarily the solution.

And where behaviour creates a safety concern for the horse or handler, we'd always recommend appropriate professional help rather than relying on a supplement to manage it.

Will BUCK OFF affect performance or breeding?

BUCK OFF isn't designed to sedate the horse or take away his energy and personality.

That's particularly important with performance stallions. The aim is to retain the enthusiasm, responsiveness and presence you want while supporting a horse that can become unnecessarily tense or over-reactive.

Does a stallion need BUCK OFF every day?

If you're going to use BUCK OFF, it should be fed consistently.

It isn't an instant calmer that can be given immediately before a competition, covering or another exciting situation. BUCK OFF typically takes around 7 days to start working.

If your stallion is naturally reactive, we'd therefore recommend keeping him on it consistently rather than trying to anticipate individual situations.

Stallions don't need to be dull to be manageable

A stallion can be alert, expressive and full of personality while still being able to concentrate and listen.

That's exactly the distinction we're interested in with BUCK OFF.

We're not trying to remove normal stallion behaviour. We're trying to support the over-reactive horse in dealing with stimulating situations in a calmer way.
